A Year Like No Other

*I wrote a poem for my students to commemorate this most unusual year. I will give it to them during our last week together.

They say the eyes are the window to your soul

This year I saw your souls

Only your souls.

Most of your face was a mystery

Covered by a mask

So we’d all be safe.

My face was covered, too.

You never got to see all the times

You made me smile.

Masks kept the virus out

But it didn’t stop the love

Spreading wildly among us.

A love for learning

A love for games, laughing, candy, songs, and sharing…

Oh, so much sharing.

Our love for each other

Could not be stopped by a mask, hand sanitizer,

Ot even a 14-day quarantine.

Some say the eyes are the window to your soul.

This year I saw only your souls.

And they are beautiful…absolutely beautiful.

UPDATE!!!

A former student, Avi Huff, read this poem and responded with a poem of her own! I apologize for the delay in updating with her poetic response, but I needed to get her permission to publish her work!

Miles Apart but Tied Together

Though you were only a small picture on a screen,

things are often more than they seem.

This virtual schooling started out as nothing more than a dream,

but you brought us all together and made us a team.

Don’t trust people you’ve never met, say few.

But in our case that isn’t true.

Because for the last year, we’ve had each other, through and through.

Though we’re miles away, we’re always tied together at the end of the day.

No matter what obstacles get in our way.
You were always there to help me, whenever I would fall.

There is no “I” in team after all.

I promise to always remember you, for now and for all.
Thank you.
